This Christmas I decided to treat myself to a Nespresso machine. I am completely obsessed with it. It is some of the best coffee I’ve ever had. And I am an avid Starbucks lover.
I owned my fair share of coffee machines. I own 2 french presses, a Tassimo, and a stove top espresso machine. Yeah, I’m kind of a coffee junkie. Don’t judge me. The Nespresso is by far the best machine I’ve owned and I highly recommend it. I also want to note here that I am not being paid or sponsored to say this – I just truly love it.
While I was in Italy last year, I took every opportunity to have dessert. Gelato, biscotti, you name it. It was in my belly. I also became a connoisseur of affogato. Italian for “drowned”, affogato is essentially ice cream or gelato drowned in espresso. And it is so delicious.
I wanted to put a bit of a sweetness spin on this traditional dessert, so I decided to add a couple drizzles of dulce de leche. If you are not familiar with it, it’s essentially a sweet milk sauce similar to caramel. I had a couple cans of Eagle Brand in my pantry, so I used that. If you cannot find store bought dulce de leche or don’t feel like making your own, you can easily substitute caramel. I highly recommend salted caramel.
The sweetness of the ice cream and dulce de leche along with the coffee flavour of the espresso makes this dessert to die for. It also wants me to book a trip to Italy ASAP.
Scoop ice cream into a mug.
Drizzle dulce de leche over ice cream.
Slowly pour espresso over ice cream and dulce de leche.
Serve!
So creamy and rich.
The espresso provides a wonderful coffee flavour.
This dessert is so decadent, sweet, and simple.
Let’s all go to Italy, shall we?
Enjoy!
- 4-5 scoops of good quality vanilla ice cream
- 1-2 tbsp dulce de leche, homemade or store bought (I used Eagle Brand)
- 1 shot (1 oz.) of espresso coffee
- Scoop ice cream into a tall glass or mug.
- Drizzle dulce de leche over ice cream.
- Slowly pour espresso over ice cream and dulce de leche.
- Serve and enjoy!
